Born in Bremerton Washington, 10th of 11 children, and raised in the greater Seattle area, and other parts of the world, Michael moved to Coeur d’Alene minutes after a medically forced early retirement with his biggest fan and lifetime love……wife Jodi.
A classically trained Tool and Die Maker for 45 years, Michael possesses a mastery of state of the art metal working machinery, but always found a more creative outlet off the job in his wood shop with other, more dangerous machines. Woodworking of all kinds was a sanity break from the day to day, high stress, extreme precision and tight-tolerance tooling work.
Inspired by segmented wood turner Malcolm Tibbetts, Michael’s retirement plan was to trade precision detailed metal work for the same in wood. Go figure. He saw segmented turning as an unlimited vehicle of expression in wood turning, exploring form, texture, grain and natural color. The plan was accelerated after a back injury and other congenital joint deterioration ended his Tooling career. Working in the shop is a gift of concentration that disallows focus on pain for hours almost daily.
His two grown children, Brenna and Micah, are Michael’s favorite artists and musicians that have also inspired him to pursue his more creative sensibilities.
Fishing, Radio- control soaring and photography are other passions that frequently interrupt shop time as weather permits.
